Why Luke's?
As America's #1 top selling frozen lobster brand we pride ourselves on the quality of our products, our sustainable methods of sourcing, and the traceability of our seafood. Sustainability is not a buzzword at Luke’s. Sustainable seafood means seafood that is harvested from a healthy population that is not at risk of overfishing, under strict regulations that prevent overfishing or eco-system damage. Traceability from dock to plate is key to ensuring sustainability, and we are proud to trace every pound of seafood we sell to the harbor where it was caught so we know the regulations that bind that fishery to sustainable harvesting methods. As more and more consumers seek out companies that put purpose before profit, you can feel confident they will find what they are looking for in Luke's Lobster products.
Our Story
Luke’s Lobster is a family-owned Maine seafood business, founded by third-generation lobsterman Luke Holden. Luke’s began as a tiny lobster roll shack in New York City, where Luke was unable to find an authentic, high quality Maine lobster roll to feed his craving for home in 2009. He partnered with his father and Ben Conniff to grow from our first shack in the East Village to where we are today.
In 2013, we opened our own seafood purchasing and production business in Saco, Maine. This made Luke’s truly vertically integrated, buying direct from fishermen we know and trust and handling our seafood throughout the dock to plate journey.
In 2018, Luke’s expanded into branded grocery, launching our flash-frozen lobster meat, tails, and seafood meals in grocery stores around the country. And in 2020, when restaurants were closing and markets for sustainable seafood vanishing, we launched our online market, to bring seafood direct from Maine to doorsteps around the country. Luke’s now has shack locations in ten US states, Japan, and Singapore, and we continue to grow and spread our mission through new shacks, new grocery partners, and new online products. As we grow, we deepen our commitment to our core values, and keep our small family business mindset, with a commitment to putting stakeholders above profits, as you’ll see from our Certified B Corp status.
B Corp
Luke’s Lobster has been a Certified B Corp since January 2018. B Corp is a certification program with a rigorous assessment to prove your company achieves social and environmental good, not just profit. Our commitment to the wellbeing of our team, our community, and the environment makes us one of the only restaurant groups in the world that “walks the walk” enough to earn this certification.
Our B Corp ethos is woven through how we do business. Things like sourcing sustainable seafood from co-ops, buying 100% renewable energy, and giving our team growth opportunities and agency in guiding our business, as well as what we do outside our day to day, investing in scientific research through the Keeper Fund or contributing food to our free fridge network are all apart of our B Corp score. We see B Corp as the embodiment of the “rising tide lifts all boats” mentality: when we work for the benefit of all our stakeholders and the environment rather than just our own profits, we all grow stronger and succeed together.
